Thinking Outside the Box to Save Money Abroad: Using Tesco Clubcards

SAVE MONEY ABROAD TESCO REWARDS CARD GROCERIES INSIDE

I'm a savvy shopper. I have numerous rewards programs and apps on my phone to save pennies where ever I can. Food is one of the greatest expenses {behind lodging} that we encounter, and this is true especially when traveling.

We often manage our spending by staying at Airbnb's or VRBO properties where we can cook at least a few of our meals each day. On a recent trip to Ireland, we had a home base in the cutest fourth floor apartment over an ice cream shop. Knowing I'd want to save my money {and calories!} for a daily ice cream treat, we set off to find a grocery store to stock up on food.

We wandered into a Tesco, a very popular UK supermarket chain that operates in several countries. Tesco is like many of the American grocery stores I've encountered in that when I was shopping around, I'd find little hang tags with a rewards member price listed. This was often a substantial discount, and like the true bargain shopper that I am, I gravitated towards those sale prices.

When it came time to checkout, I asked the clerk how I could become a Tesco rewards member. I am after all, an HEB rewards member even though I don't live within 2000 miles of a store, I just happened to stop there once or twice on trips to Texas! Heck, I'll join any rewards program!

I was informed that in order to become a Tesco rewards member that I'd need an Irish email address or a UK address. I didn't have either.

But here's the work around...

The clerk suggested that I google "Tesco club card" and then select image on my search. I found multiple club cards for this very reason! I even found these two to share here. I don't know who they belong to or if they work, but by golly, happy to share them just in case you want to try it!

I didn't really want a kick back from the rewards, what I really wanted was the discount on the food I was buying. The discount worked, and I saved $25 on my bill!

Every little bit saved is more money that you can spend on something you really want to be spending your money on!

This little money saving hack may work all over the world anytime you run into a supermarket or store chain that have a rewards program. It's worth tucking this tip in your back pocket to try sometime! It just might save you some money!
