During the summer months, I spend a lot of time on the beach. Having the perfect book to read while soaking up the sun is a must for me, and having a great beach read is essential in every beach bag I pack. After all, why waste your time in the sun with a boring book? Because people know I'm a reader, I often get asked about my top picks for books. It' beach read season and these are my top beach reads I'd recommend!

How to Choose a Great Beach Read

When it comes to picking the perfect beach read, I have a few great suggestions that will help you pick the perfect book, and I’m sharing some of my own favorites to help you find your perfect beach read.

Don't Forget to Use Your Local Library

I LOVE our local library. Every library is different, but ours has a section with very popular books that often have very long wait lists called Lucky Day. You can't reserve these books, and you can't renew them, and if you happen into the library and grab one, it's your lucky day!

Librarians are a really good source of information on how to find what to read next too. They love reading and they love when others like to read. If you tell them a few books you liked already, they can generally point you in the right direction.

Summer is also a good time to enjoy the library too. They often have kids programs and events. Ours also has a seed library with free seeds you can grow in your garden, and a puzzle exchange where you can swap out puzzles with your neighbors.

Tips for Choosing the perfect beach book

Here are my tips for choosing the perfect beach book.

You can never go wrong with a good romance novel

When choosing a romance novel, you want to avoid trashy romance novels. There’s nothing wrong with reading something like 50 Shades of Grey, but do you want to really hide the book every time one of your kids comes running over?

I highly recommend The Paris Wife or The Light Between Oceans for a great romance beach read. The covers are unassuming, so you won’t feel self-conscience reading them in public, and you won’t feel like you need to hide your book every two minutes.

Humor is always a classic

While relaxing on the beach, I love having a few good laughs! I loved reading The Rosie Project; it was the perfect mix of humor and comedy. Bonus, it has a whole series, so if you love the first book, there are two more books in the series, The Rosie Effect and The Rosie Result.

You want a book that is easy to follow and sucks you in!

An intense hard to follow story every now and then can be exciting. When I’m on the beach, I like to have a book I can easily look up to without missing a beat. If I need to check on the kids or step away for a second, I know it’ll be waiting for me when I return.

Personally, I felt that these books could suck you into a captivating page-turning story without feeling like I had to wait until “a good stopping point” before I could step away.

Consider your preferences, and start there. Then read some book reviews. Don't forget to ask friends who also have similar book preferences. I would never ask my friend who likes sci-fi for a book rec because I know that's not a genre I enjoy, but your friend who nods her head when you talk about your favorite books? Ask that one! They will likely have something good to recommend.
