Dalgona Whipped Cinnamon Coffee

I didn't start drinking coffee until a few years ago, and now I appreciate the delicious daily pick me up. A new trend in coffee drinks is Dalgona or whipped coffee. It's trendy and taking over social media by storm, so if you are curious about it, why not give it a shot and see what all the hype is. I did. Made with simple ingredients, this sweet frothy drink can be served hot or iced and it may just be your new favorite way to drink coffee.

What is Dalgona coffee?

Dalgona coffee is known by a few names. People call it whipped coffee, frappe coffee,  Korean coffee, or even quarantine coffee. According to Wikipedia, dalgona is derived from Korean sugar sweet. The drink made waves during quarantine as more and more people were staying home and sharing DIY recipes and photos.

What is in Dalgona or whipped coffee?

The ingredients are fairly simple. Some die-hard coffee fans {like myself} might feel an aversion to the recipe since it calls for instant coffee, but friends, it's ok to embrace it.
Besides instant coffee, you will also be using sugar, hot water, and milk. For this recipe, we are also adding cinnamon for an extra twist.

**Can you use regular coffee {freshly ground} in whipped coffee?

The short answer is no. If you try to use anything other than instant coffee, you will find that it doesn't whip and give you the same creaminess as instant coffee, so don't try to be too fancy with this.
If you want to be fancy, give Starbucks Via packets a try. That may make you feel better than using your granddads old instant coffee.

It's going to be far easier to use a hand mixer to whip your coffee. You can try this hand mixer, it comes with a whisk too!

But if you don't have a hand mixer, you can use a whisk. Just be prepared to get an arm workout. I'm hearing reports of whisking upwards of 400 times just to get the creamy whipped consistency you are looking for.

Sweet and frothy, this whipped coffee isn't for everyone, but it's worth a try. Add cinnamon for a fun twist and enjoy this delightful coffee treat.

Ingredients:

  • -3 tablespoons of hot water
  • - 3 tablespoons of sugar
  • - 3 tablespoons of instant coffee
  • - 1 teaspoon of powdered cinnamon
  • - Milk of your choice

Instructions:

  1.  In a bowl, put together 3 tablespoons of instant coffee, 3 tablespoons of sugar, and 3 tablespoons of boiling water.
  2. Beat everything well, with a hand mixer or a whisk until everything is well beaten and the consistency is similar to whipped cream.
  3. Add the cinnamon and mix a minute more.
  4.  Fill a mug until about 2/3 with milk. You can use cold or warm milk according to your preferences, or you can also use a dairy substitute beverage of your choice.  Add ice for a refreshing drink.
  5. On top, put a few spoons of the whipped coffee.
  6. Your Cinnamon Dalgona coffee is ready! Use a spoon (or a cinnamon stick!) to mix the coffee with the milk as you drink it. Using powdered cinnamon on top more is more for decoration than necessity!

Notes:

You can use whatever quantities you prefer, as long as you use the same amount of hot water, sugar, and instant coffee. This is enough for two big cups.

Storing your whipped coffee

Oh no! I made too much!

Don't worry, you can store your whipped coffee in an airtight container for a few days. Don't mix it with milk just yet and you should be ok.

You can also whip some ahead of time so that you won't have to go through the long process of whipping the topping every day.

Give it a try and let me know what you think!

Hi, Rachael! My favorite coffee drink at Sbux is a blonde caramel macchiato.😋 I am over this Stay Home, Stay Healthy order, too, but also thankful for so much, including this amazing weather. Enjoy your weekend! ☀️

I might or might not try this, but I just want to say how amazing your photography is. I usually scroll right past all the photos on food blogs. There always are too many. Not so here. Thanks for the recipe AND the eye candy.
