I remember being a young kid experimenting in the kitchen. Thankfully my mom always encouraged me in the kitchen and I think like with all things, with experience comes expertise. Sometimes you have to fake it until you make it and you need a few baking hacks from time to time to get you through. Here are a few of my favorite baking hacks to get you started.
Easy Baking Hacks You Can't Live Without
When you take the time to research, you'll find tons of easy baking hacks to take advantage of. Here are several to get you started.
DIY Brown Sugar
In a pinch, you can easily make your own brown sugar with molasses and white sugar. Start with a bowl of white sugar. Add small amounts of molasses and stir until you reach the desired consistency and color.
Floss for Precise Cutting
Floss is a handy tool in the kitchen, especially for bakers! Quickly level cakes with floss, as well as cut even slices of soft foods that would otherwise be squished by kitchen utensils.
Quick Room Temperature Eggs
Don’t sweat it when a recipe calls for room temperature eggs and you forgot to take them out of the fridge beforehand. Get the eggs up to room temp fast, simply by placing them in a bowl of warm water.
Grate Burnt Cookies
You don't have to let your hard work go for nothing when the bottoms of your cookies accidentally burn. These blackened bottoms can typically be saved with just a few quick swipes across the burnt portions with a cheese grater.
Easy Eggshell Removal
Eggshell pieces in your batter can be a huge pain. The gooey parts of the egg make it difficult to fish out shell remnants with fingers or utensils. Use the large portion of remaining shell to retrieve the broken pieces from the bowl. The small bits stick to the larger piece, making it an easy fix.
Additional Baking Hacks
· When only glossy frosting will do, grab your hair dryer {turned on low} to slightly melt the icing.
· Use aluminum foil to re-size a tart pan or cookie sheet. To bake small tarts, for instance, make foil borders to fit around each one. This keeps dough from spreading.
· Keep your counter cleaner. Make a splatter screen out of a paper plate, when whipping up batter with your mixer.
· To keep baking chips from sinking to the bottom of whatever you're baking, toss them in flour before adding them to the batter.
· Make the cutest mini pies ever, using canning jar lids.
· In a hurry to bake frozen bread dough. Place the pans on a heating pad {set on the lowest setting.}
-Use a heated corn sack warmed in the microwave to help your bread dough rise quicker.
-Did you know you can grate your butter to make it easier to use in a pie crust recipe or for making flaky biscuits?
