Why I'm a Fixer Upper Fan Not Because of the HGTV Show but because of Chip and Joanna Gaines
If you search my blog for even a second, you will see tons of HGTV Fixer Upper posts. You might think I'm a super fan. I am, but I'm a fan accidentally. You see, before the Fixer Upper Mania started, my oldest son was looking for colleges. He knew he wanted to be away from the rain of the Pacific Northwest and with careful consideration, he narrowed down a few schools in California and Texas. We started our due diligence of college research and sought out alumni of the universities he was interested in and then planned a trip to Texas after the applications were sent in.
Baylor University in Waco, Texas was the very first college acceptance letter my boy got. Friends of friends started connecting me to Baylor alumni because I'd never stepped foot in the great Nation of Texas before and I wanted to make sure I wasn't sending my kid off to a bunch of people like I remember seeing from the Branch Dividian.
Why I Am a Fixer Upper Fan: Not Because of the HGTV Show but Because of Chip and Joanna Gaines
While Baylor University wasn't love at first sight for my kiddo, I was smitten. The Magnolia Silos had opened just a few weeks prior to our college visit and the crowds weren't coming in droves just yet. I felt like we were coming into Waco at a period of great transformation and for the past two years, this sweet town has been a home away from home for my boy.
I've gotten to see and feel the ripple effect from Baylor University alumni Chip and Joanna Gaines throughout Waco, Texas. I've seen the prints this God-loving couple has left on their community and I've met people touched and changed by this humble couple.
So it's not a TV show that left me as a Fixer Upper fan, nope, I'm a fan because of the example Chip and Joanna Gaines have left for not only me but countless others.
I may not have caught every episode, but I have met person after person who knows Chip and Joanna personally and there is not a single one of them who don't tell you how very genuine this couple is.
And isn't that the legacy we all want to leave? To live a life being true to who you are in Christ so that others can see the light the shines inside of you.
While I still don't understand why people would make a special trip to Waco, Texas, I do understand that there is a little something different about this town. And I can see why people are drawn to this area.
In a world where we are more connected than ever, we experience more loneliness and social isolation. I think it boils down to the relationships.
Relationships we have seen played out on TV for five seasons of Fixer Upper but also those relationships we create in the check out line at Magnolia Market or during a Waco Tour started by friends of the Gaines family.
There is much more to Fixer Upper than just the homes demo'd on the show. It's about really living for Christ. And that my friends is why I am a Fixer Upper fan.
Philippians 1:19-20
19 because I know that by means of your prayers and the help which comes from the Spirit of Jesus Christ I shall be set free. 20 My deep desire and hope is that I shall never fail in my duty, but that at all times, and especially right now, I shall be full of courage so that with my whole being I shall bring honor to Christ, whether I live or die.

They really do seem so genuine and are such great role models. I have always loved their show, not only for the beautiful transformations but for them. I also love how their show doesn't have the usual drama you see on other shows where they don't have enough money to finish the plan and the people are all annoyed. Fixer Upper is a pleasure to watch and I will definitely miss it!

I love the show.for the same reason. How refreshing in this day and age to see a genuine couple living their life out on the screen. They also create the most amazing homes!
I totally agree with you. I fell in love with the show and when I lived in Texas I would go to her little shop as often as I could, I was only 45 minutes away. I always hoped I could "accidentally" run into one of them when I was there. I am so thankful in this crazy mixed world we live in there was always an hour where I could pull away for an hour. I will miss them.
PS - I love your blog too :)
I also love Chip and Joanna- true Christians will miss them as they step back from tv show and to have their 5th child!!
I've never watched the show but have heard such great things! Will have to check it out :)
I grew up in Waco, so when they announced a show about fixing up houses in town, I am on board. My dad sends me every article in the local paper and when we visit, it is amazing to see how the town I was ready to escape after high school is becoming a "hot" spot for tourists. I too am a fan of Chip and Joanna because of how much they have done for this sleepy town. Looking forward to their next endeavors.
Robin, it's such a cute little town and I've seen it change through the few years we have been visiting with my son at Baylor. I can only imagine how much it's been changed for someone who used to call it home many years ago.
