DIY Woodland Kids Room Makeover Reveal

For nearly a year we have been following a young couple as they rehab their historic mansion in small town Indiana. We have been fortunate enough to get a glimpse inside as Dea and Christian do their best to restore this 1871 mansion that they call home. The most recent room makeover occurred in one of their upstairs bedrooms. It was transformed into a woodland kids room with some of the most stunning details. While this room had great bones to begin with {isn't the trim amazing?!}, details like board and batten and wallpaper were added to balance the traditional historic feel with a new modern twist.

DIY Kids Woodland Bedroom Makeover

There are many things I love about this historic mansion but the windows and the trim have got to be my favorite.  Nearly every room in this home was covered in some type of wallpaper. If you have ever removed wallpaper in your life you will know that as you remove it you curse the humans who thought it was a good idea to add paste and paper to a wall. This doesn't stop Dea though! She keeps stripping wallpaper and rolling with the new trends and adding new fresh wallpaper to the walls. Which is great because the end result is simply amazing. She shares some of her wallpaper removal tips here.

Christian and Dea want to keep the integrity of the historic home in tact as much as possible, but update it to include the needs of their contemporary modern lifestyle. This is one of the rooms that still had it's original light fixture and that remained during the transformation. Though at some point, the light fixture will probably be replaced.

The trim details in this room inspired Dea to add board and batten to the bottom portion of the walls. She used a contemporary birch wallpaper to pull in the woodland theme.

The tall windows on the second floor already make you feel as though you are high up in the treetops, so I love that this room echos that feeling in the design.

Dea has many talents, including being an amazing modern quilter {she also made the quilt that you saw in her master bedroom makeover}. She made matching quilts and pillow cases for the matching beds that were bought from a local used furniture store. The dresser was from Christian's grandmother's estate and the seating that she recovered was from his great grandmother. 

The matching chairs {not pictured} have an amazing fox detail that inspired the design of this room, but Dea quickly told me that the bear head in the room was the real inspiration. She saw it at her local Target and couldn't pass it up. The room came together with that one detail.

I love the tree stump end table and the toy box overflowing with woodland creatures that have made their home at the end of the beds.
