Easy Handmade Leather Accent Clutch
I don't like to carry a big bulky purse so a clutch is the perfect size for me to put everything I need inside. I can make one to go with every color scheme I have!
Here's what you will need:
1/2 yard of leather accent material {this is what I used}
1/2 yard fusible interfacing {like this}
3/4 yard outside material {I used this}
1/2 yard lining material {you can pick a fun accent color for a fun pop. I used this}
14" zipper
The supplies will be more than enough for making a few clutches. I'm a fabric hoarder and like to make sure I always have enough material just.in.case.
You will need to cut:
2 pieces of your outside material 12" x 8 1/2"
2 pieces of lining fabric 12" x 12"
2 pieces of interfacing 12" x 12"
2 pieces of leather 12" x 4 1/2"
Start by sewing your leather piece to the bottom of you outside material with the right sides together. Do the same to the other piece.
Split the seams and iron them down making a nice crisp crease.
Iron your interfacing to the back of your lining material. Do this to both pieces.
Every.single.time I sew a zipper I always wonder why I am so nervous. I'm not very spatial so I have a hard time visualizing the zipper and making the pieces all go the right way.
Start by placing your lining right side up with the interfacing side down. Your zipper is going to lay flat, right side up and it's going to go past both ends. Don't worry. It will work! Next place your outside fabric with the right side facing the lining and line up the zipper edge with the edges of your pieces of fabric. It should be lining, zipper, outside material. You with me?
Sew all your layers together. After you sew them together, iron your fabric back and then stitch down as close as you can on the outside to finish it off.
To finish everything off, open up your zipper half way. This step is important! Pin your lining fabric right sides together and then pin the outer fabric sides together making sure all your pieces are lined up, but especially the leather edges. Sew all the way around your clutch being careful around your zipper. Make sure you leave a three inch opening in your lining material so you can flip your clutch.
Clip the edges and poke them out and sew up and finish the final lining seam. You don't want a hole that can catch all your pennies now do you?! That's it! Easy peasy.
Stuff your clutch with all the basics and enjoy!
Don't forget to shop at fabric.com to get everything you need for your next sewing project.
Let me know if you make one. I would love to see it!
