Easy Zippered Fold Over Clutch with Leather Accent

This is a sponsored post written on behalf of fabric.com. All opinions are 100% my own.
One of the first things I ever learned to do was sew. I had a small sewing kit in a blue tackle box with all these miniature size spools of thread and since my mom had a sewing machine, I had access to a whole lot of scraps. I remember one of the first things I made was a shirt for my cat Alex P. Kitten to wear in the 4th of July parade.  I really should have jumped on that animal clothes bandwagon and capitalized on that far sooner because I hear that gig is a billion dollar industry!  By the time middle school rolled around I was sewing dozens of hair scrunchies to keep my 80's hair accessorized. I still love to sew, though it's not always something I make time for. I think in the new year, I am going to spend more time whipping some things up because I enjoy it so much. I started by making this easy zippered fold over clutch with leather accent. It's so easy that you can make one for yourself in under an hour.  And if you shop at fabric.com like I did, you don't even have to leave the house!

I've got the full tutorial and all the supplies, so come check it out!

Easy Handmade Leather Accent Clutch

I don't like to carry a big bulky purse so a clutch is the perfect size for me to put everything I need inside. I can make one to go with every color scheme I have!

Here's what you will need:

1/2 yard of leather accent material {this is what I used}
1/2 yard fusible interfacing {like this}
3/4 yard outside material {I used this}
1/2 yard lining material {you can pick a fun accent color for a fun pop. I used this}
14" zipper

The supplies will be more than enough for making a few clutches. I'm a fabric hoarder and like to make sure I always have enough material just.in.case.

Start by cutting your fabric.

You will need to cut:

2 pieces of your outside material 12" x 8 1/2"
2 pieces of lining fabric 12" x 12"
2 pieces of interfacing 12" x 12"
2 pieces of leather 12" x 4 1/2"

Start by sewing your leather piece to the bottom of you outside material with the right sides together. Do the same to the other piece.

 Split the seams and iron them down making a nice crisp crease.

Iron your interfacing to the back of your lining material. Do this to both pieces.

Every.single.time I sew a zipper I always wonder why I am so nervous. I'm not very spatial so I have a hard time visualizing the zipper and making the pieces all go the right way.

Start by placing your lining right side up with the interfacing side down. Your zipper is going to lay flat, right side up and it's going to go past both ends. Don't worry. It will work! Next place your outside fabric with the right side facing the lining and line up the zipper edge with the edges of your pieces of fabric. It should be lining, zipper, outside material. You with me?

Sew all your layers together. After you sew them together, iron your fabric back and then stitch down as close as you can on the outside to finish it off.

Now for the tricky part. You ready? Put your interfacing down with the right side of your lining fabric up. Line up the end of your zipper {the one that you didn't just sew} to the top of the lining. Place the outside fabric piece right side down and line up your pieces. Sew these layers together, fold them back and iron them and then do a top stitch to finish the seam.

To finish everything off, open up your zipper half way. This step is important! Pin your lining fabric right sides together and then pin the outer fabric sides together making sure all your pieces are lined up, but especially the leather edges. Sew all the way around your clutch being careful around your zipper. Make sure you leave a three inch opening in your lining material so you can flip your clutch.

Clip the edges and poke them out and sew up and finish the final lining seam. You don't want a hole that can catch all your pennies now do you?! That's it! Easy peasy.

Stuff your clutch with all the basics and enjoy!
